If it is the first time that we meet a ferret as a pet, it is important to know some basic points about its care and customs before taking it home and making it one more member of the family.
1. THE PERFECT HOME.
Although the ferret needs to sleep and sleeps about 18 or 20 hours a day, it is important that in the moments that it is awake it can enjoy space to play, since they are very active animals.
The ideal is a cage with a base of approximately 1m2. The height is not so important, moreover, sometimes it can even be dangerous, since if they fall from above, they can suffer fractures or injuries.
Inside the cage, we will install a tunnel and different toys so that the ferret can experience all kinds of adventures.
2. A GOOD START.
The ferret pups that we can find as pets are usually very sociable, although that does not mean that they cannot "bite" us during the first two days.
When you get home, it's important to leave him in the cage for a long time, so he can rest and get used to his new home. After a few hours we will have to start taking it and being with it to establish a good relationship of trust.
3. THE TIME OF THE GAME.
As we have already mentioned, ferrets are very active when they are awake. Apart from the fact that they can have a good cage for their games, it is important that we also share the games with them, for at least two hours a day. This way we will create a routine and reinforce their confidence in us.
4. SAFETY ABOVE ALL.
Ferrets are born explorers, and very curious!
If we leave them loose at home, we must pay special attention that there are no electrical cables within their reach, as well as open windows, buckets of water, toxic products...
They will also love to explore the outside world, so with a good harness and leash, we can take them out for a walk.
5. SOCIALIZATION.
Ferrets that have gotten used to people since they were little are usually very tame, although we must not forget that they are living beings, and that, just like people, each one has its own personality.
What one ferret likes may bother another, and they tend to be very stubborn animals to a greater or lesser extent, although that does not mean that they cannot be trained.
Ferrets will be delighted to play with us, but to make them really happy, the ideal is to keep them in pairs, they can be two males, two females or one of each. In this way they have much more fun and interact with each other.
